not a single one

There are lots and lots of things wrong with the world, I’m well aware. At 5:30am though, here in Punta Cana, not a single one of them crossed my mind.

thinking of you guys…

I shot a wedding last year on September 4th. There was a hurricane going on- Hurricane Earl, but despite, and even in spite of the weather, we got some great shots. Nothing like a hurricane wind to blow a dress around for the perfect picture!

Jean-Marc and Solveig Giffin are currently living in Japan and in light of the recent disasters there, I’ve been thinking about them a lot. They are amazing people with so much to offer the world. They will do big things. And they will do little things which will in turn help other people do big things. I’m happy to know that they’re safe and I’m also happy to know that Japan has them on her side right now.

Here are some of my favorite shots from their wedding day. Stay safe you guys, and keep being awesome, fantastic, world-changing people. Much love.

pretty please

Pretty please get better, Carrie. Pretty please feel better tomorrow morning. Wake up and shake and stretch and groan. Let your nails click on the floor out to your dish where you stand with your tail wagging for me to put food in it. Pretty please eat it all. And fast. Like you do when you’re feeling like your silly little black self. Make your way back to the bedroom after you lick your paws when you’re done eating and put your head down on the bed, and wait to be invited up. Wag your tail and make little huffing noises. Hop up when I move over, and then go ahead and squish your face into the comforter. Wiggle around and leave your tri-coloured (but mostly black) fur all over my bed. Pretty please perk your ears up when I move my feet and pretend that you’re going to bite them through the blankets. Speak and sneeze when I ask you when you want to go for a walk. Pretty please stop and smell as many lamp poles and fire hydrants as you want while we’re walking. Go ahead and growl at other dogs.  Beg for some of my breakfast- I promise I’ll give you some.  Pretty please sneak up on the couch. Lay just off of your blanket. Bark and be excited when Dane comes home. Ask to come with me when I grab my car keys. I will happily take you if you want. Put your head on my arms while I’m editing on the couch. Make it hard for me to do work so that I pay attention to you. Grab your squeaky sheep that sounds like a duck and throw it in the air to get my attention. I will throw it for you and you can fetch it three times and then ignore it. Pretty please lick my face when I lean down to kiss you goodnight. Wag your tail when I tell you how good you are. Because you are so good. Pretty please just get better and be my best little black dog again.

oh, baby.

Meet Norah Ann Rodgers. To say she won me over would be an understatement.

“wait, what was your pony’s name?”

Not many of my clients call me. Most of our communicating is done through emails or through facebook. We arrange dates, times, bounce ideas around, talk on messenger or chat, text for directions on the day of the shoot, and then finally meet in person. I don’t mind. Phone calls are becoming fewer these days- my own dad even texts me now!

I did get a phone call from Kim a few months ago, though. We talked about her daughters and their pony, and how excited they were for a photo shoot with me. We talked dates and locations and times and details. As we were about to say our goodbyes, she happily said “we’ll make sure Oakley is sparkling clean for you when you come!” and I smiled into the phone and said “great!” And then right before we hung up, I said “Wait! what was your pony’s name?”

And it was Oakley. Oakley was the last baby born to my lovely bay mare, Century. She was born on April 14th, 2003 in Cold Lake, Alberta. She is chestnut with a big star and snip and strange liver spots all over her body. We sold Oakley not too long after moving back from Alberta and kept track of all of her homes. I was thrilled to know that I’d be seeing her again soon. She was exactly like I remembered her- sweet, beautiful, a crazy mane and forelock, and so full of personality. She loved her two little girls and their mom. She was happy and loved and spoiled. And just when I thought that I couldn’t ask for more on such a perfect winter weekend, the sky opened up and gave me giant, slow-falling snowflakes. The kind that happen to good people on good days.
