ACAA Womens Volleyball Finals

“I’m not really a ‘team sports’ kinda gal,” I offhandedly mentioned to Dane’s uncle Terry at the game on Saturday. He took his eyes off the game, eyebrows raised and looked at me for a second. “Well, you picked a heck of a family to get involved with then,” he said with a laugh. Dane sat to my right, clapping his approval for a play, appearing almost calm next to his dad who’d just lowered himself back into his seat after leaping up and yelling “OUT!” loud enough to make my eyes grow big and wonder if that was a ‘normal’ reaction to girls in teeny shorts standing still while they watched a ball land on the outside of a painted green line on the floor of the AC gym.

Yep. Normal reaction. In fact, it would be one of the more subdued leaps I’d witness over the next two days.

I met up with Caila the morning before their game on Sunday. The final. I asked her as I was leaving if she’d be sticking around after the game for a bit. Her coach walked by as we were talking and said, “We’ll be sticking around to celebrate after the game on the court, if that’s what you mean.” I smiled at him, hugged Caila and wished her luck as I went to meet with a client.

Dane’s little sister, Caila is 20. She is in her third year at Mount Allison University and has played volleyball all of her life. She loves her team and I cannot count how many times I’ve heard her say “I love those girls!” when I bring them up in conversation. It’s a sight to watch them play together. Right or wrong, hit or miss, smiles or tears, they have each others’ backs. Every play is followed by a group hug, reassuring nods, high fives, and smiles. The energy in the gym when they play is unreal. Exhaustion be damned- there is shrieking, screaming, yelling, fist pumping, and arms being thrown up every few minutes. As Dane and I walked into the gym on the first day, I asked him, “What is that noise?!” slightly alarmed at what sounded like a mass slaughter, followed by strange whooping noises. He laughed and told me, “Girls volleyball, Danique. You’ll see.”

And see I did. I watched them shriek, scream, yell, fist pump, hug, and play a bit of volleyball all the way to the 5th set (that’s what it’s called, right?) of the final game of the weekend. Then I watched them cry, hug some more, smile, and celebrate on the court after the game when they won. Just like their coach said they would.

Robyn and Darren- Engaged!

It was a surprise. Like, total surprise. Darren meticulously wrapped, duct taped, re-wrapped, tied, and wrapped her present, one last time, just for good measure. Robyn said her first thought was “Oh, some jewelery. Good job, Darren.” When she figured out what it was, she started crying. And kept crying. Sobbing, almost. Poor Darren. He told her if she didn’t like it that he’d bring it back- get her a new one. At that Robyn was able to compose herself and let it settle in that she was engaged. Getting married. To Darren. She told me that she felt like the luckiest girl in the world. That it was the best day of her life. I said “Really? Like, positive that it was THE BEST day of your life?” She looked down at her left hand, smiled at me as she looked up, and said “yeah” and nodded as she turned to watch Darren walk out of the tack room near the back of the barn.

I love those moments. I love that my job is to capture those moments and to be with those people who make those moments into pictures that should be taken. I really love my clients, too :)

Dreams Tulum, part 9

We’d talked about doing another shoot the day after the wedding. Laura wanted to make use of the beautiful turquoise waters, the big blue sky, and our last day at the resort. She happily put her dress back on, put her hair up and did her make up again. I asked Craig if he’d mind dressing up again. He gave me a look, glanced at his new bride, and sweetly obliged :)

These are what we ended up with:

Thank you Laura and Craig, from the bottom of my heart. I had so much fun, learned more than I could have ever imagined, met and became friends with the coolest people, ate and drank to my heart’s content, got a sweet tan, and came home with a few decent pictures, too. You guys were awesome. You families were awesome. Your friends were awesome. It was an honour to have been a part of this whole thing.  xoxoxo

With a backdrop like Dreams Tulum resort, how could these pictures not have turned out?

Thank you Craig and Laura for a spectacular day. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I feel like I’ve been a bad blogger. I have a lot of excuses why I haven’t been as diligent as I should have been over the last few weeks with posting new daily blogs (especially in the middle of a wedding! gah!)- moving, setting up a new apartment, not having internet, my computer crashing, work, Carrie getting some teeth removed, other editing, Bermudian friends coming to enjoy the snow… but let this be my public pledge that I’ll be blogging at least 4 times a week from now on. It’ll be another addition to my lifestyle change that started mid February.

Alright, with that out of the way, let’s move on to the ceremony. Again, perfection. Not a single thing went wrong.

Laura’s little brother, Nick, walked her down the aisle. Her mother cried. Actually, we all cried- even Laura.
